How to do research: (see also art-specific research training sessions)

General

Sunderland University's Research Student Training modules (not art-specific) are now on the web, and include worksheets on time management, ethics, etc. The web modules cover only some of the live modules with real people which are listed in the Research Student Training Programme Catalogue. There's also a Telematics course and IT Training.

News of the School's additional art-specific research training sessions are emailed to students. Some of the sessions are now also documented on the web, accessed with your student password. These documents are useful for revision and reference but should not be seen as a replacement for attending the sessions.

Birmingham Institute of Art & Design produce good print and Internet materials as part of the Research Training Initiative.

Dissertation Abstracts Online Searchable lists with titles and abstracts all theses accepted for higher degrees at universities in Great Britain and Ireland from 1970. Sunderland University IS an 'organisation with a subscription' so you can go straight to that option if you're connecting from the Uni.
UMI: Online Dissertation Services USA-based searchable and downloadable graduate theses. Without a subscription you can access the most recent 2 years. To search the entire database of more than 1.6 million titles (titles since 1997 are available in PDF digital format and have 24 page previews available), you will need to connect from a subscription institution.
ARIAD: Art and Design Research Database NOW ON-LINE UK (and Australia) database of completed research, including lists of supervisors, but can be rather patchy. (In Ashburne Library on CD, as well as on-line).
Arts Research Digest UK publication and database partially on the web. Mostly arts management research but growing in other areas.

Forthcoming: Beryl Graham's section for VADS about art dissertations using new digital formats.
