Brief report from informal visit to Grizedale, Aug 14th-15th 1999 < Back to Events and Reports
An informal visit by myself, Veronique Chance (Sunderland Uni digital artist), Ele Carpenter (NGCA), and Rupert Clamp (Newcastle artist) was set up to find out what new directions the new director Adam Sutherland is taking Grizedale. New initiatives include residencies by artists using new technologies such as Simon Lewandowski, Calum Stirling, and (forthcoming) Nina Pope. Work which critically deals with Grizedale's context as a tourist/'outdoors' attraction, (such as Calum Stirling's Logo) is also in evidence. Newer 'traditional' sculptural works in the forest include Louisa MacDonnell's River Under Tension. The 'educational' programme is very much integrated with the general art programme. The University of Sunderland should be collaborating with Grizedale on a series of research projects. There's a special Open Weekend with events and presentations by the artists illustrating the new directions, at Grizedale 24th-26th September. Recommended! Beryl Graham, August 1999. |
