Brief report from Navigating Intelligence/Curating New Media symposium, Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada, Sep 9th-12th 1999
< Back to Events and Reports

There's a speakers' list with links, and some snaps from the event too.

This event was a combination of Navigating Intelligence (artists using database/browser/search etc. software) with a one-day Curating New Media prologue. It follows on from several such Banff events (from which reports are available) such as Curating New Media in May 1998, and Out of the Box in Sep 1998 (non-screen-based interfaces).

Curating new media seems to be at a strange stage - many mainstream galleries are still not engaging with it, although interestingly, galleries such as the Walker in Minneapolis are curating excellent web-based work whilst not showing interactive physical work in their galleries. Some international artists' work includes: Jorge Le Ferla from Argentina and Kostja Mitenev from St. Petersburg.

They're all there on the speakers' list, but particularly memorable presentations included Bean (Tina Blaine's) collective drumming table, Daniel Andujar/Irational's highly ironic Technologies To The People; Radio Internationale Stadt's collection of free indie music; Joshua Portway/ Realworld's fun music software 'Noodle'.

Some commercial products I hadn't seen before included: Plumbdesign's wibbly visual thesaurus and their similar Sony music database. Also, a really simple to use freeware 3D modelling programme called Teddy.

Beryl Graham, September 1999.
